White Elephant Gift Ideas

The goal: something funny enough to get a laugh, useful enough to not get returned.

White elephant gifts walk a tightrope. Too practical and nobody fights to steal it. Too much of a joke and whoever ends up with it is stuck with junk. The winners are always the gifts that are genuinely funny AND secretly useful.

The winning formula

Something that gets an immediate reaction ("oh that's cute" or "wait, I actually want that") combined with something you'd actually put on your desk or bedside table. Animal-shaped night lights are a prime example — they get a laugh when unwrapped and then get taken home and actually used.

Price range

Most white elephant exchanges cap at about £15-20. That's enough for something good. Don't go too cheap (it shows) or too expensive (it makes everyone else's gift look bad).

What to avoid

Anything genuinely offensive. Anything that's only funny if you explain it. Re-gifted candles. "Funny" mugs with jokes that were dated five years ago. The test is simple: would you be happy to end up with it yourself? If not, don't bring it.
