How to Choose a Night Light

It's not complicated, but a few things are worth thinking about before you pick one.

Brightness

The whole point is gentle light. Enough to see the room, not enough to keep you awake. Adjustable brightness matters — at least two levels, ideally controlled with a single tap rather than fiddling with buttons.

Colour

Warm tones tend to feel calmer in the evening than harsh white or blue. A lot of people prefer a soft amber for actual sleep and use the colour-changing modes during the day or for play.

Power source

Plug-in lights are reliable but live in one spot. Disposable batteries are a faff. Rechargeable is the easiest for most people — charge it once, then pick it up and put it where you want.

Material

Hard plastic is fine if it never moves. Soft silicone is much friendlier in a kid's room or anywhere it might get dropped. Easy to wipe clean, nicer to hold, and it doesn't crack.

Controls

Simple wins. Tap-to-control is the easiest for kids and adults alike. Tiny recessed buttons or app pairing tend to add complexity without much benefit.

Size

Big enough to spot in the dark. Small enough to pick up. Roughly fist-sized works well for most rooms — not so small it disappears, not so big it takes over the bedside.
